I love fairy tales. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I consume YA fantasy, sci-fi, and dystopic fiction like it's food. My favorite stories are those that are fairy-tale retellings. Donna Jo Napoli is the perfect example of a YA author who has intelligent, fresh, and unique perspectives on classic fairy tales.
When people say, "fairy-tale wedding" they are usually referring to the fact that the bride looks like Cinderella, and everything is beautiful, and fireflies dance in the moonlight.
Well, that's total crap. The Grimm Brothers wrote fantastic fairy tales that were dark, and sinister, and beautiful, all at once, like the mermaids in the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie (don't kill me for making that reference!). In any case, the Grimm Brothers did something Disney did not, which is to allow the gritty side of life to combine with the beautiful. Disney pretends all is beautiful, to a flat, if somewhat endearing, effect.
I'm not suggesting I incorporate the "gritty" side of life into my wedding, but I would love to do something that reflects the idea of "fairy tales." I will come back to this idea...
